Luminaries resting in peace within the shrine confines: Ayatollah Seyyed Javad Khamenei
Ayatollah Seyyed Javad Khamenei (December 7, 1895 –July 5, 1986) was an Iranian Shia scholar who spent his entire life on researching Islamic and seminary sciences. Born in Khameneh in Iran’s East Azerbaijan Province, he attended seminary schools in Najaf, Qom and Mashhad. He received his Ijtihad permits from three great authorities in Najaf, namely Ayatollah Mirza Mohammad Hossein Naeini, Ayatollah Seyyed Abolhassan Esfahani, and Ayatollah Sheikh Mohammad Hossein Gharavi Esfahani.

After obtaining the degree of Ijtihad in Najaf, he settled at the vicinity of the Imam Reza holy shrine in Mashhad and remained there until the end of his life. Ayatollah Seyyed Javad Khamenei became prayer leader of an Azeri mosque in Mashhad. He was also one of the prayer leaders of Gowharshad Mosque. The Ayatollah was widely reputed for his generosity among people of Mashhad.
He married Khadijeh Mirdamadi and they owned four sons and a daughter named Seyyed Mohammad, Seyyed Ali, Badrossadat, Seyyed Hadi and Seyyed Mohammad Hassan. One of his sons, Seyyed Ali Khamenei, is now the Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution.
He was a pious person and a man ignorant of worldly matters. Although his children reached high political and executive positions after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, he did not lose his contact with the public and continued his simple life. He always benefited from public’s special attention as he owned great human standards. While having high scientific positions, he lived in a humble house until the last day of his life. Ayatollah Seyyed Javad Khamenei was a constant opponent of the oppressive regimes; he never accepted or endorsed policies of such regimes.
Ayatollah Javad Khamenei departed for his heavenly abode on July 5, 1986 and was buried at a place near Imam Reza holy shrine’s Dar al-Feiz Portico near the holy grave of Imam Reza (AS). His grave is frequently visited by thousands of pilgrims of Imam Reza holy shrine every day.
