This balcony known as "Bab-al-Salam" has been located at the middle of the eastern side of the courtyard symmetrical to the western balcony (Tala or Golden Balcony). The Eastern balcony, along with its two passways in two sides, is one of the main entrances to the Azadi courtyard. The plinth of the balcony has been covered with high quality Khalaj stone and the wall of the balcony, from over the plinth to the muqarnas-worked ceiling of the balcony, has been decorated with tiles. The muqarnas-worked ceiling also has been decorated with tile-shaped painting and coloring with colorful designs and shapes.
Inside the balcony, a tradition about the merits of making pilgrimage to Imam Reza (A.S.) from Imam Kazim (A.S.) quoted from the book “Tahzib (Purification)” of Sheikh Tusi has been inscribed by Muhammad Hussein Shahid Mashhadi in 1271A.H. Also, two Surahs called "Nasr" and "Qadr" have been inscribed around the inner portal of this balcony. The names of the renowned tilemaker- Ustad Muhammad Kashi Paz- and the calligrapher- Muhammad Hussein Shahid Mashhadi- rest on this inscription.
The outer portal and facade of this balcony also enjoy some decorations and inscriptions. Over the plinth to the muqarnas-worked ceiling of the balcony has been decorated with the best quality tiles and the ceiling has been decorated tile-shaped painting and coloring. Moreover, the muqarnas-worked section of this balcony has been decorated with 22 holy names of Allah-the Exalted. In the inscription over the entrance of the courtyard there is a Persian text that reads as follows:
«In the name of Allah-the Exalted, on the occasion of the Iran's Muslim nation's freedom from the bond of slavery under the decisive leadership of Imam Khomeini (R.A.), this courtyard was named "Azadi (freedom) courtyard". 27th, Jamadi-al-Thani, 1399 A.H.»
It is worth mentioning that the grand balconies and portals of the Azadi courtyard have been renovated after the Islamic Revolution.
