The illumination of the holy shrine of Imam Reza (A.S.) has been focus of attention of the pilgrims and lovers of Imam Reza (A.S.) and in many endowment letters the revenue of some estates of the endowments of Astan Quds Razavi has been designated to the illumination of the holy shrine and other sacred premises.
In past centuries a portion of holy shrine’s illumination was supplied through the small booths over platforms (Suffahs) and a portion through burning candles.
Later, lighting the candles in the holy shrine and inside the porticos was carried out by the pilgrims out of vow and dedication. Gradually for lighting of the holy shrine, tallow-burning lamps and silver candlesticks were used.
As timed passed different kinds of lights such as crystal, mental, and wall lamps were used to illuminate the holy shrine.
In a later time with entrance of the lamp to Mashhad, the previously used lighting devices were transferred to the museum as the antique objects.
The illumination of the sacred premises and the holy shrine in particular was very important so that the pilgrims could recite prayer and holy Qur’an under the light of chandeliers and lamps comfortably.
