حرم امام رضا
Years of Hardship and EstrangementThe holy burial chamber, where the holy body of Imam Reza (A.S.) was buried
The holy shrine was a very small and simple building during the initial years of burying the holy body of Imam Reza (A.S.). The old shrine enjoyed only a simple entrance placed in front of the holy burial chamber and had very simple decorations and designs, specific to that period. The terraces around the holy shrine, except for the one placed in front of the holy tomb, were erected
outside the building and there was only one dome on the summit of the holy tomb.
In those years, the area around the holy shrine was empty of population. Noughan-one of two famous villages of Tus-was the only residential village.
The policy of tyrant rulers in keeping Shi'ite Muslims' behaviors and movements under strict surveillance and preventing them form paying attention to the holy shrine of Imam Reza (A.S.) and doing pilgrimage was the main reason for not erecting an appropriate building for the holy shrine even after a long period.
Finally, years of hardship passed slowly. The holy shrine under the blessing of Allah-the Exalted- remained secure against damages and losses during these dreadful years and conditions. Thanks to blessing of Imam Reza (A.S.), successive miracles emanated from the holy grave of Imam Reza (A.S.) that came to solve the problems of needy people. These ever-increasing miracles caused Muslim people and rulers of the other regions, Khurasan in particular, to pay utmost attention to the holy shrine and its affairs. The devotees of the holy Imam (A.S.) considered it as an incumbent religious duty to come to the holy shrine for pilgrimage. Therefore, they endeavored to erect, reconstruct, decorate, illuminate and preserve this sacred place.
Through several centuries, the authorities of Islamic countries, the rulers and nobles of Khurasan, sincere devotees and all those interested in his holiness (A.S.), endeavored to bring magnificence and glory to this holy building by endowing a part of their properties. In addition to decorating and illuminating these sacred premises, they constructed and erected magnificent premises in the holy shrine, rich in eye-catching architectural designs and arts.
