Former Grand Custodian of AQR
Ayatollah Waiz Tabasi was born in Bahman, 1314/ January, 1936 and in a religious family. His mother was an honorable lady and his father, Sheikh Gholam Reza Waiz Tabasi, was one of the most influential Shi’ite clerics of his time whose enthusiastic lectures were very famous in Shi’ite world.

While traveling to Tehran to deliver one of his revealing lectures, Ayatollah Tabasi's father passed away when he was only one year old. His father's demise happened in a way that many clerics of the time believed his death was an assassination.
Ayatollah Tabasi's education was started in Mashhad and continued to high school level in new schools. His sincere interest in religious sciences moved him toward seminary, however. He studied in the classes of Ayatollah Adib Neyshabouri (Adib Thani), Mr. Modarres Yazdi, Sheikh Mojtaba Ghazvini, and some prominent figures such as Ayatollah Milani, while being a pupil in Mashhad's seminary.

In an interview published by Payam Inghelab Journal in 1362, 1983, Ayatollah Tabasi refers to his memories of Ayatollah Neyshabouri's classes and says, “I remember that holy month of Ramadan was in summer. The weather was very hot in the afternoon and we thought to everything but hot weather. We were focused on the lesson and very much attracted by Adib's teaching. Whatever he thought was very interesting for us and we became interested in that topic. When he introduced us some of the sayings and quotes of the prominent Shi’ite Ayatollah's and great scholars we became even more interested in studying”.

A Start for Fighting
In 1330/ 1951, a very important incident happened in Ayatollah Tabasi's life. It was an incident which changed his life. In this year, Martyr Navab Safavi created a very deep eagerness and enthusiasm in the hearts of young seminary students and it was a starting point for years of fighting against tyranny.

Ayatollah Waiz Tabasi says himself, “My evident fight was started in 1335/ 1956 when my brother, Ayatollah Khamenei, was not present in Mashhad and Martyr Hashemi Nejad was in Qom. Therefore, I was alone at that time and it was a very hard time for me since anti-fight approach was also widespread in the seminary of that time. Some years later, we formed a united front by joining these two brothers. At the beginning of our activity we were alone, but we decided to have a center for our common friends later on”.

First objection of SAVAK on Ayatollah Waiz Tabasi's approach appeared when he was talking about the rulers' justice in Muhammadiyeh House in 1339/ 1960. His lectures were all canceled and he was deprived from giving lectures. This prohibition on Ayatollah Tabasi's continued for seven months as different groups of people compelled the government to cancel this prohibition. The second important incident of Ayatollah Waiz Tabasi's life happened in the same year. In this year, he got familiar with the high ranking Shi’ite cleric of his time, Imam Khomeini (R.A.) and this familiarity paved the way for lifetime cooperation with Imam Khomeini.

In 1341/ 1962 and after holding the ordered referendum of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and following some lectures against this referendum, Ayatollah Tabasi was arrested and transferred to Tehran.

A few months after the demonstration of 15th of Khordad, he went to Imam Khomeini (A.S.) present as the representative of Mashhad's seminary and delivered a speech as it was ordered by Imam Khomeini (R.A.). In that lecture, he elaborated on different aspects of movement of 15th of Khordad. Following this speech, Ayatollah Tabasi was arrested in Qom and transferred to Qezel Qaleh prison of Tehran.

After a series of lectures in Rafsanjan in 1344/1965, his lectures were prohibited once more. During these years, he became familiar with the Islamic Revolution's other companions such as Mr. Bahonar, Mr. Motahhari, Mr. Beheshti, and so on and he tried, while being accompanied by other revolutionary clerics, to pave the way for Islamic Revolution's victory.

After the victory of the Islamic Revolution
When Islamic Revolution came into victory in 1357/ 1979, Imam Khomeini (R.A.) who had a special attention to the holy Shrine of Imam Reza (A.S.) gave the temporary management of this holy place to Ayatollah Tabasi. Two years later and with respect to great performance of Ayatollah Tabasi during his supervision in Astan Quds Razavi, Imam Khomeini officially appointed, on Farvardin 15, 1359/ April 4, 1980, him as the Custodian of Astan Quds Razavi. After the departure of Imam Khomeini (R.A.), Ayatollah Tabasi's custodianship was confirmed by the Supreme Leader.
Appointment letter of leader of the Islamic Revolution is as follows:

In the name of God, the compassionate, the merciful
His Excellency Hojjat al-Eslam Abbas Waiz Tabasi

All the servants of the Razavi Shrine will cooperate with you to do so. What is important to remind is that none of the organizations of the Islamic Republic such as ministry of national guidance, Construction Jihad or other common people are permitted to intervene in the endowments and properties of Astan Quds Razavi. I want Allah to help us in doing divine duties.
And peace be with you!

Ruhollah Mūsavi Khomeini

Ayatollah Waiz Tabasi was also elected as the representative of Wali Faqih in Khorasan and also management of seminary of the province. He was one of the founders of the Islamic Revolution Committees and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Khorasan province.

In addition to this, Ayatollah Tabasi was present in the Assembly of Experts for Constitution as the representative of Khorasan. He was also a member of Assembly of Experts of the Leadership for three consecutive terms.
In 1375/ 1996, Ayatollah Waiz Tabasi was selected as a member of Expediency Discernment Council of the System so that he can give service to the Islamic government and its high goals. This membership was continued to 1379/ 2000.
